This residency takes place at Project Art Center, in Dublin and supports artist Chisato Minamimura in developing a series of new Deafscapes, creative explorations of how soundscapes can be visually reimagined from a Deaf perspective. Drawing inspiration from Dublin’s natural and changing landscapes, Chisato explores how environmental shifts can be perceived and interpreted through visual and embodied forms rather than auditory cues.

At the heart of the residency is her developing use of Visual Vernacular, a performance technique that brings together Sign Language, gesture and movement to create rich, emotionally resonant narratives without relying on spoken language or captions.

Working alongside local Deaf and hearing artists, sound designers and climate experts, Chisato investigates how Deaf-led artistic practices can challenge established narratives and open up new ways of experiencing and understanding environmental issues. The residency acts as both a creative laboratory and a space for reflection, allowing ideas, artistic practices and collaborations to evolve while laying the foundations for Deafscapes of Gaia, Chisato’s long-term exploration of Deaf experience, inclusive storytelling and climate consciousness.
